One of the most interesting and pleasant architectual benefits of the Barbican is the separation of foot traffic from street traffic, with the creation of the Podium level. The Podium level rests above street level providing foot traffic throughout the estate, serving the dual purpose of distancing the street noise and also detering anyone with no business there with its elaborate laborinth of paths. *laugh*
