We started off with a walk round the markets of Greenwich, which were considerably larger than we first realised. Then we scrambled onto Greenwich pier for a boat trip down the Thames to the Barrier and back. We discovered that the Thames Barrier is likely to be obsolete within 10-15 years due to rising tide levels. This multi million pound project took approx 10 years to build, and the barriers rise from the river bed in segments. One segment is actually up in the photo on the left. The barrier is raised quite regularly throughout the year.
